BHUBANESWAR: Incessant rains since the last 24 hours disrupted normal life at many places in the state on Sunday. Many low-lying areas were flooded, while some rivers were suddenly flooded.
The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has asked district collectors to closely monitor the situation and be prepared to deal with waterlogging in urban areas, local floods and landslides in hilly areas.
A low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression in the next 12 hours, which is likely to bring more rains over the state. The IMD has issued a warning of heavy rain in six coastal districts for the next two days.
The pilgrimage town of Puri recorded the highest rainfall of 145 mm on Sunday, with several parts of the city inundated while tourists had to walk through knee-deep water at the Sun Temple in Konark.
Jalka river in Balasore district was flowing above the danger mark at Mathani due to heavy rains in the upper catchment areas. At the time of writing this report, it was flowing at 5.7 meters, slightly above the danger mark of 5.5.
The sky remained cloudy in the state capital Bhubaneswar. Till afternoon, the city witnessed torrential rains, which continued throughout the day and rained briefly. The city recorded 119.1 mm of rain between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Sunday.
