The Meteorological Department on Sunday said that West Bengal is likely to receive heavy rains till October 20 as a low pressure area over North Telangana and strong southeasterly winds are blowing from the Bay of Bengal.
It advised fishermen not to venture into the sea till Tuesday and warned of landslides in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts due to rise in water level in rivers, waterlogging in low-lying areas and rain.
Regional Meteorological Center deputy director Sanjib Bandopadhyay said standing crops in the fields could be damaged as paddy was almost ready for harvesting in several districts of the state.
Some southern districts of the state, including Howrah, Hooghly and East Medinipur, have been flooded due to recent rains and spate of rivers.
Mr Bandopadhyay said that the southern districts of the state including Kolkata are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall from Sunday.
He said that the rains will increase in the districts of North Bengal from Monday.
The Meteorological Department said that the rain caused by a low pressure area over North Telangana and strong southeasterly wind is likely to continue till Wednesday.
Squally wind speed reaching 40 to 50 kmph very likely over South 24 Parganas and East Medinipur and 30 to 40 kmph very likely over Kolkata, Nadia, Howrah, North 24 Parganas and Paschim Medinipur districts.
