Heavy rains cause severe waterlogging at Visakhapatnam airport in Andhra

Cyclone Gulab: Severe waterlogging was witnessed at Visakhapatnam International Airport today following heavy rainfall due to Cyclone ‘Gulaab’ in the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh.

The cyclonic storm, which crossed the Bay of Bengal coast near Kalingapatnam on Sunday night, caused widespread rain and devastation in several districts of Andhra Pradesh on Monday.

The cyclone in Visakhapatnam caused over 33.3 cm of rain in 24 hours to 30 years.

According to Collector A Surya Kumari, 13,122 hectares of agricultural crops and 291 hectares of horticulture crops have been damaged in Vizianagaram district.

Nine cattle also died in the cyclone. District Collector A Mallikarjuna said that in Visakhapatnam, boulders fell on a house, causing it to collapse and killing a woman.

The Collector along with Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Commissioner G Shrujana inspected the rain-affected areas in the city and supervised the relief work.

Chief Secretary Aditya Nath Das visited the worst-hit district of Srikakulam and reviewed the rescue and relief operations. The district administration provided shelter and food to over 1,500 people in 38 relief camps.

Trees uprooted by the cyclone were cleared from roads on a war footing, while Eastern Power Distribution Company personnel repaired damaged power lines.

According to IMD data, over 450 places spread over Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna districts recorded 60.3 mm to 333 mm of rainfall in 24 hours.

Guntur and Prakasam districts received 7.5 mm of rain, while SPS Nellore and four Rayalaseema districts received 2.4 mm of rain. The sea continues to remain rough over North Coastal Andhra, which may give moderate to heavy rainfall.
