‘He’ll have to deal with ghosts’: Robin Uthappa on Virat Kohli’s century

An athlete’s career goes through its share of ups and downs. While you can’t let victory get to your head, don’t let tough times overwhelm your conscience. India and CSK batsman Robin Uthappa recently opened up on the vulnerability that athletes have to deal with in the professional sport.

During his appearance on the Mind Over Medals podcast, Uthappa said that players can express their views by talking about the issues they are facing. He believed that athletes should find a person with whom they are comfortable sharing their feelings.

Much has been said on mental health awareness and it is important to have empathy for human beings, according to the cricketer. He said there should be someone to ask an athlete whether everything is okay or not.

Uthappa said that there is power in vulnerability, and it has to be dealt with by expressing it. The cricketer said that athletes need to find someone they are comfortable with, whom they trust, and above all one where they cannot be judged.

“If you think someone is off, you ask them ‘Hey, how are you? Do you want to talk about something?’ To be so sympathetic as a human being that ‘is everything okay?’, said Uthappa.

Continuing further, Uthappa expressed hope that someone has such sympathy for batting legend Virat Kohli. Cricketer is going through a tough time. He has been under increasing pressure to perform with Willow as he hasn’t scored a century in the last two years.

Uthappa said it is difficult for a player like Kohli not to score a century in two years.

“The kind of thoughts running through his mind, the kind of ghosts he would be dealing with would be huge,” he said.

The former Indian opener concluded by saying that such battles usually turn out to be very lonely for the players, so a little empathy could be just the boost needed.
