Summer vacation is just around the corner. For children, this usually means freedom from the day-to-day routine of school. However, for parents, the words “summer vacation” pose a dilemma: How to ensure devices and screens don’t fill up every waking minute of every day for two months. With lots of free time on hand during the holidays, 85% of parents surveyed are concerned that kids are spending excessive screen time during breaks.

To help children make the most of their summer vacation, parents want them to learn skills such as speaking English (50%); good morals and social etiquette (45%); performing arts such as dance, singing and playing an instrument (36%); arts and crafts (32%); and physical and outdoor activities (32%).

Tips to Limit Screen Time for Kids

  • It is the near activity that causes the potential risk of short-sightedness in children and hence it is important to restrict their near activities, be it gadgets or reading novels etc.
  • Let them use TV or big screen remotely to watch cartoon shows or movies with a limit of 1 hour per day
  • Complete ban on nearby gadgets like mobile, tablet or laptop
  • A balanced day out for kids with a mix of outdoor and indoor activities
  • Encourage them to play outside especially before 10 am or after 3 to 4 pm
  • Take care of the general health of the child which can affect the health of the eyes as well
  • As the age-old saying goes, early to bed and early to rise is always beneficial for the overall health of the child.
  • Help them organize their time with summer classes or family time sessions or group activities in your apartment.

Kids these days use their devices for everything: doing research for school projects, messaging with friends, letting us know they’re safe when they’re out, as well as for gaming and consuming media. Yet children need to spend time outside or reading books, or just thinking. However, setting rules and then reliably and consistently enforcing them can be difficult. As with everything else in life, developing a game plan can pave the way to success.
