The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) provides Tatkal passports to people who are in urgent need of a passport. The Tatkal Passport Scheme allows anyone traveling abroad to obtain a passport without the lengthy documentation and verification process. Due to its urgency, the service requires an additional payment of Rs 2,000 for the entire process.
It is to be noted here that the police verification for Tatkal passports takes place after the passport is issued, unlike regular passports. But, before knowing the steps, it is important to know the eligibility to apply for Tatkal passport.

Applicants above the age of 18 years can submit the required documents along with the application for Tatkal passport. However, the following categories of people cannot apply for Tatkal passport. The final decision on the matter rests with the jurisdictional passport office which may accept or decline the request depending on the urgency of the matter.
Indian citizens born outside India
Indian citizens who acquired citizenship status through naturalization or registration
Deported applicants from other countries India
Applicants who have returned to their country at the expense of the government
Residents of Nagaland and Jammu and Kashmir
Citizens of Naga descent living outside Nagaland
Adopted children of Indian and International parents
Children living in Nagaland
Candidates who have recently got their passport renewed due to lost or stolen passport
Application because the applicant’s passport has been irreparably damaged
Change in gender or appearance
Changes to personal information, such as signature
How to apply for Tatkal passport?
Simple steps to apply for Tatkal passport:
Step 1: Create an account on the official website of Passport Seva
Step 2: Enter your ID and Password to log in
Step 3: A menu will appear, giving you the option between fresh and reissue of passport. Select the appropriate option.
Step 4: In the menu, select Tatkal plan
Step 5: Download and Complete the Application Form
Step 6: Reach the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) on the scheduled date and time with the required documents. Applicants must remember to attach the receipt of application and other identity proof.
Remember, you must have these documents while applying for Tatkal Passport Seva – Any three of the following documents Election Card/Service Photo Identity Card/SC/ST/OBC Certificate/Freedom Fighters Identity Card/Ration Card/Property Document/Pension Document, Others.
