by Dr Smita Pankaj Naram

Diabetes has become a serious health problem today, affecting the daily lives of many young and old people. Known as “madhumeh” in Ayurveda, it is a subtype of prameha which is characterized by sweet urine. Mainly there are types of Prameha – Avarana and Dhatukshaya, which are commonly known as Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes.

An excess of mucilage doshas such as kapha (mucus) and pitta (heat) along with ama (toxins) inhibits insulin secretion and/or creates cellular resistance to blood glucose. Therefore, inhibition of insulin secretion leads to increased blood glucose levels. Cellular resistance prevents the absorption of blood sugar into cells. Therefore blood sugar increases.

Though it can be serious for some people, it can be effectively controlled by making some lifestyle changes. According to Ayurveda, excess sugar levels reduce the Agni function of the body and this is one of the main contributors to the development of diabetes. To live a healthy way, here are some tips to start with.

Include fenugreek seeds, jamun and amla in your daily diet

Galactomannan, found in fenugreek seeds, slows digestion and reduces the absorption of carbohydrates. Jamun has many benefits in managing insulin and increasing insulin production, so jamun is recommended for diabetics. Chewing 4-5 Jamun leaves throughout the day can also be beneficial.

Consume chromium-rich amla to treat high blood sugar

The chromium content of amla improves insulin sensitivity, so to lower blood sugar levels and activate the cells of the pancreas, one should consume it uncooked or in combination with bitter gourd and amla.
