A girl student of Girls Pre-University College in Udupi district has moved the Karnataka High Court with a prayer to grant her the right to wear a hijab (headscarf) inside the classroom. The writ petition was filed on behalf of student Resham Farooq, who was represented by his brother Mubarak Farooq. The petitioner contends that the right of students to wear hijab is a fundamental right under Articles 14 and 25 of the Constitution and is a compulsory practice of Islam.

The petitioner also sought permission for her and her fellow students to attend classes wearing hijab without the intervention of the college administration. The plea said that the college in Udupi has denied admission to eight students who follow and profess the Islamic religion. These students were denied their fundamental right to education for wearing hijab. The petition claimed that the action of the college administration is unconstitutional, arbitrary and boycotted in nature.

Shatabish Shivana, Arnav A Bagalwadi and Abhishek Janardan are appearing for the petitioner. The first hearing is expected by the end of this week. Udupi MLA and College Development Committee president K Raghupati Bhat, who met students protesting the right to wear hijab in the college, had on Monday categorically stated that students wearing headscarves are not allowed inside classrooms as per the education decision. will be let go.
