Thousands crowd for pro-hijab rally in Malegaon, Maharashtra!

Thousands of people, including women, gathered at a pro-hijab rally in Malegaon in Nashik district of Maharashtra on Thursday. The rally was organized by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind. The organization has also called for celebrating ‘Hijab Day’ today in protest against the ban.

The protesters demanded that the Karnataka government’s hijab ban order be withdrawn.

According to reports, the organizers of the protest march did not take the permission of the police. The police have booked four organizers for violation of prohibitory orders under Section 144. Along with this, AIMIM MLA Mufti Mohammad Ismail Qasmi, who represents Malegaon Central seat, has also been booked by the police.

Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind had earlier announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh to a Karnataka student who faced hundreds of protesting students. Bibi Muskan Khan, a second year graduate student, raised the slogan of ‘Allahu Akbar’ in response to the slogan ‘Jai Shri Ram’ by some other students.

Earlier on Thursday, the Left-affiliated All India Students’ Union (AISA) protested outside Karnataka Bhavan in New Delhi in solidarity with Muslim students over the issue of ban on wearing hijab in educational institutions in Karnataka. He was detained by Delhi Police and taken to Mandir Marg police station.

The hijab controversy started in late December when some students wearing hijab started coming to a government pre-university college in Udupi. To protest this, some Hindu students came wearing saffron scarves. The controversy also spread to other educational institutions in different parts of the state and protests turned violent at some places earlier this week, prompting the government to declare a three-day holiday for the institutions.
