Hijab controversy: Won’t allow ‘Talibanisation’ of education system, says Karnataka BJP chief

Amid protests by a section of students seeking permission from authorities to wear hijab in classes in some colleges in Karnataka, BJP state chief Nalin Kumar Kateel on Saturday said the state government would not allow ‘Talibanisation’ of the education system. .

“There is no scope for such things (wearing hijab in classes). Our government will take strict action. People have to follow the rules and regulations of the school. We will not allow Talibanisation (of the education system),” he told reporters here.

Stating that it is not right to bring religion in educational institutions, Kateel said that children need education. “There is no scope for hijab or anything like that in schools. The schools are the temples of ‘Saraswati’ (Goddess of Knowledge). It is the duty of the students to learn and follow the rules of the school,” the BJP leader said.

BJP MLA from Vijayapura Basanagouda Patil Yatnal said that some people were deliberately demanding permission to wear hijab in classes. “Once that demand is met, they will seek permission to wear a burqa and then build a mosque inside the school,” he alleged.

“The demands will continue. Those who are supporting him are real anti-nationals.” People entering educational institutions and schools and colleges with vermilion on their forehead for a question about the worship of Lord Ganesha, Yatnal said, “This is India and our country is based on Indian culture. We have already given Pakistan on the basis of religion for them to wear hijab.”

Meanwhile, many students staged a sit-in protest in Kalaburagi under the leadership of Congress MLA Kaneez Fatima. They raised slogans like ‘We want justice’ and ‘Gundagardi nahi chalegi’.

The MLA said that she would take up the matter in the Karnataka Assembly demanding permission for hijab in classrooms. A similar demonstration took place in Udupi where students wearing burqas came to the campus and sought permission for hijab.
