Himachal farmers protest season affected, loss of Rs 100 crore

Interactive: Weather patterns leading to dry aridity and summer rains have created a double whammy for the farmers of Himachal Pradesh. They have suffered a lot by compromising because of this. According to the State Daman Operation Center data, the total loss of Udas and season till May 9 this year is around Rs 104 crore. Out of this, loss of Rs 40.60 crore has been incurred due to agriculture forecast and Rs 63.42 crore has been earned.

Agriculture director Suraj Kaushik said prolonged weather after wheat seed sowing in early summer and rains during the harvesting season in summer caused heavy losses to wheat farmers in the state. Wheat cuttings were sown on 3.30 lakh hectares of land in the state and the target is to produce 6.17 lakh metric tonnes.

Seasonality has also been documented to affect apple production. Greensh Chauhan, president of ‘Fruit Vegetable Flower Growers Association’, told ‘PTI-Bhasha’ that due to low rainfall and employment, it has become difficult to get good quality apples necessary reason.

He said hailstorm in April and May has affected the growth of apple as heat affects the size of apple. Chauhan said that about 800-1200 hours of chilling is needed for traditional apple ripening.

He says that 3.52 crore boxes of apples were produced in 2022-23 and this year there could be a loss of 30-40 per cent due to the fissic season. Chouhan informed that apple horticulture is done on 94,000 hectares of land in the state. Himachal Pradesh received 117 mm of rain from January 1 to February 28, compared to the average of 187.1 mm in the winter season. There is a shortfall of 37 percent in this.

On the other hand, between March 1 and May 10, there was 12 percent more rainfall in the previous season. The average rainfall during this period is 199.4 mm while 222.4 mm has been received. It has been seen in Lahaul-Boli and Kinnaur in the first nine days of May.
