Hindu Sena put up saffron flags, banners at JNU main gate

A right-wing group put up banners and saffron flags near the main gate of Jawaharlal Nehru University on Friday. The Hindu Sena also warned of “strong action” if it was “an insult to saffron”. Police said he removed flags and banners and registered a case under the Act relating to defacement of property.

“During investigation, three persons involved in the crime were tied up as per the legal process and the vehicle used for the crime has been confiscated. He said further investigation is on. This process does not involve taking into custody or arresting the accused and does not require filing of any charges. Hindu Sena chief Vishnu Gupta admitted that the posters reading saffron JNU were put up by the organization’s national vice president Surjit Singh Yadav. In a video circulated on WhatsApp, Gupta warned students against insulting saffron.

“Saffron is being insulted regularly in the JNU campus. We want to warn those who do this. mend your ways. We will not tolerate this, he said in a Hindi video. We respect your ideology and every religion. But insulting saffron will not be tolerated and we can take strong measures,” he said without explaining the insult.

The right-wing organization said in a statement that the police should not be in a hurry to take down the flags as it is not a symbol of terror. It is the right to defend saffron and Hindutva under the law. The JNU unit of the Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) said that JNU will never become a symbol of religious majoritarianism.

JNU-NSUI strongly condemns the posters and flags put up by the so called Hindu Sena.
