Hockey India announces 18-man squad for FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup

Hockey India An 18-member Indian women’s hockey team was on Tuesday selected for the much-awaited FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup to be held in the Netherlands and Spain from July 1 to July 17, 2022. India are placed in Pool B along with England, New Zealand and China. Nemesis will begin his campaign on 3 July against England, to whom they lost the bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The Indian team will be captained by ace goalkeeper Savita and vice-captain Deep Grace Ekka.

The 20-member team includes goalkeeper Savita and Bichu Devi Kharibam. Defenders Deep Grace Ekka, Gurjit Kaur, Nikki Pradhan, Udita have been named along with midfielders Nisha, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, Monica, Neha, Jyothi, Navjot Kaur, Sonika and Salima Tete.

The forwardline has the very experienced Vandana Katariya, Lalremsiami, Navneet Kaur and Sharmila Devi, while talented young stars Akshata Abso Dhakale and Sangeeta Kumari have been named as replacement players.

In the previous edition of the prestigious quadrennial event held in London, the Indian team advanced to the quarter-finals, but lost to Ireland in a shootout after a 0-0 stalemate in regulation time. Ireland, who beat India 3-1 in a shootout, played in the final of the World Cup and ended their campaign with a silver medal.

Speaking about the team selection, head coach Janneke Schopmann said, “We have selected the best team for the World Cup. It is a mix of experience and young talent who showed great promise when given a chance against the top teams in the FIH. Is. Pro League.”

The Indian team will play their group stage matches in Amstelveen, Netherlands, and if they finish at the top of the group, they will also play in the quarterfinals in Amstelveen, before the team advances to the semi-finals in the knockout stage and final base qualification in Teresa, Spain.
