Hockey India’s election process will be completed by October 9, the sports body’s committee of administrators said on Wednesday after submitting the first draft of its amended constitution to the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

In a joint statement, the FIH and the CoA said that the final draft of the constitution would be delivered to the FIH headquarters in Lausanne “within the next 10 days”.

“The first draft of the amended Constitution of Hockey India has been handed over to the FIH & COA, Hockey, today as per the directions of the Hon’ble Delhi High Court. India A final draft will be delivered within the next ten days. Additionally, it was mutually decided to complete the process of election for Hockey India by October 9, 2022,” the joint statement read.

A two-member FIH delegation is in the national capital to discuss the way forward and avert the possible suspension of Hockey India, which is currently placed under the CoA on the directions of the Delhi High Court.

The good news for HI is that the FIH “does not treat the court as a third party”, ruling out the possibility of a ban with only a few months left for the men’s World Cups in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.

The meeting was attended by FIH Acting President Seif Ahmed, CEO Thierry Weil and members of the CoA – former Supreme Court judge Justice Anil R Dave, former chief SY Qureshi Election India’s commissioner and former Olympian Zafar Iqbal.

Speaking with reference to the Delhi HC order regarding HI, Ahmed said, “We do not consider the court to be a third party and respect the judiciary. We believe that the court order is not interference.”

Dave said, “The interactions were extremely positive and encouraging. Keeping in mind the foremost importance of the spirit of the sport and the best interest of our athletes, we conclude on some important next steps to ensure the continued smooth conduct of hockey in India. And be able to agree.”

The visiting FIH delegation also met on Tuesday Play Secretary Sujata Chaturvedi.

“It was a positive meeting and the conversation with him is in line with the outcome of today’s discussions with the CoA, Hockey India,” the statement said.

Vinil Krishna, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Government of Odisha in the State Sports and Youth Services Department, also met with the FIH delegation and made a presentation on the upcoming World Cup.

“The infrastructure development for the prestigious tournament was appreciated by all and it was agreed to visit Rourkela’s site on September 7, 2022 by the members of FIH and COA, Hockey India.

“After this tour the official draw for the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 will be announced on September 8, 2022 from Bhubaneswar.”

This comes after the FIH last month sought a “detailed timeline” from the CoA on adopting the amended constitution and holding fresh elections in HI.

The FIH CEO also said last month that he was looking forward to hosting the World Cup in India.
