Hockey India Senior Women’s National Championship 2022 to start from May 6

A total of 27 teams will compete for the top honors in the 12-day tournament when the Hockey India Senior Women’s National Championship 2022 begins in Bhopal on May 6.

The participating teams are divided into eight pools. Hockey Madhya Pradesh, Hockey Chandigarh and Hockey Bihar are in Pool A, while Hockey Haryana, Assam Hockey and Hockey Bengal are in Pool B. Pool C includes Hockey Punjab, Chhattisgarh Hockey and Tripura Hockey, while Pool D includes Hockey Maharashtra, Hockey Rajasthan, Hockey Uttarakhand.

Hockey Jharkhand, Hockey Andhra Pradesh and Le Puducherry have been included in Pool E, while Hockey Karnataka, Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu and Hockey Arunachal, Hockey Andaman and Nicobar have been placed in Pool F. Pool G includes Uttar Pradesh Hockey, Delhi. Hockey, Goa Hockey and Hockey Gujarat, while Pool H consists of Hockey Association of Odisha, Kerala Hockey, Telangana Hockey and Hockey Himachal.

Speaking on the prospect of defending the title, Hockey Madhya Pradesh coach Vandana Uikey said, “There will be a bit of pressure playing as title defender at home, but I think we are fully prepared mentally and physically . We’ll go play-by-play, our first goal is to qualify for the quarters, and then get to the knockout stage depending on who we play against. The preparation has been great and the players are excited to take part in the competition.”

Meanwhile, Kuldeep Siwach, coach of last year’s runners-up team, Hockey Haryana, said, “We missed out on the title last year, but this time I am hopeful that we will win the title and continue the legacy of Hockey Haryana in the competition. We have been training for a long time, and we will definitely give our best to win the title.”

Speaking about her team’s preparations for the competition, Hockey Punjab coach Yogita Bali said, “The preparation for the tournament has been really good. We have a good mix of young and experienced players. Around 10 players have recently got exposure from Khelo India, so we have good momentum for this tournament. We finished third last year, but we hope to reach the finals this time.”

After eight days of pool matches, the quarter-finals will be played on May 14, the semi-finals on May 16 and the medal matches on May 17.
