Hockey World Cup: Malaysia beat Japan, France against Chile in playoff matches

Malaysia scored twice in the third quarter, while Japan could only manage one, thus falling short in their attempt to win the match and finish 14th.

Malaysia beat Japan 3-2 in the two Asian teams encounter and France beat Chile 4-2 in the playoff matches for the 13th to 16th places in the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s. World Cup at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium here on Saturday.

Malaysia started the day’s proceedings when they beat Asian Games gold medalists Japan in a close encounter, capitalizing on two goals from Shelo Silverius. The teams were tied 1-1 at half-time after Japan’s Kaito Tanaka had neutralized Silverius’ opening goal in the 7th minute from a penalty corner.

Silverius again put Malaysia ahead in the 31st minute, but Japan equalized again within seconds with a field goal by Seren Tanaka to make it 2–2.

But two minutes later Suhaimi Shahmi scored another goal to put Malaysia ahead 3-2. And that’s how the score stood in the end. At the end of the third quarter, Japan applied a lot of pressure but was thwarted by the Malaysian defence. During this, he got five penalty corners but could not convert even one into the goal.

Malaysia also received two cards – a green for Rosalie Ramadan in the 52nd minute and a yellow card for Najmi Jaziyan in the 58th minute – but Japan failed to capitalize on the man advantage.

In the second match of the day, France defeated Chile 4–2, with their top scorer Victor Charlot scoring two goals through penalty corners.

Eliot Courtey gave France an early lead in the 13th minute with a field goal. Carlett then scored twice within a minute, converting two penalty corners to make it 3–0 for France in the 17th minute. Although Franco Becerra scored Chile’s first penalty corner of the match in the 20th minute, France were 3–1 up at half-time. Javier Gaspard made it 4–2 in the fourth minute as the French defended stoutly to win the match.

France took advantage of the opportunity while Chile failed to exert enough pressure. The South Americans were also troubled by disciplinary cards. He got two green and one yellow card in the second half of the match. France got four penalty corners, of which they converted two.
