Holi 2023: Holi, popularly known as the festival of colors, is one of the widely celebrated occasions across India. This year, Holi festival is being celebrated in some parts of India including Maharashtra. Rest of the countries will celebrate the festival of colors on 8th March. On Holi, people smear each other with colored powder, splash colored water and dance to the beats of drums. Most of the colors sold in the market during Holi contain harmful chemicals that can cause health issues including skin and eye infections. Children are more prone to such infections from chemical dyes.

In order to avoid the harmful effects of chemical colors, the trend of adopting natural colors has increased in the last few years. Natural colors are safe for children and they can enjoy Holi without putting their health at much risk.

It is a common belief that natural colors are costlier than the regular colors available in the market. But this Holi you can make natural colors for kids at home too.

Homemade Holi colors are not only natural and eco-friendly, but also safe to use, cheap and easy to make. You can also involve your kids to experiment with different natural ingredients and use their creativity to create their own unique colors.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make Holi colors at home with natural ingredients.

The colour red

Component:

  • red sandalwood powder
  • Beetroot
  • red rose petals and hibiscus flower
  • Pomegranate peel

Method:

Boil beetroot or beetroot peels, red rose petals, hibiscus flowers and pomegranate peels together in a vessel with water on medium to low heat.

  1. You can add 2 tbsp red sandalwood powder to it
  2. reduce the mixture to a concentrated liquid
  3. Keep stirring till you get a smooth and uniform mixture. Add more water if necessary to adjust the consistency.
  4. After boiling for 15-20 minutes, leave the mixture for an hour or two.
  5. Strain the liquid and you can grind the ingredients into a paste and add it to the filtered water.
  6. Now your concentrated red color is ready. You can enjoy Holi by mixing it in water.

Orange color

Component:

  • dried marigold flowers
  • turmeric powder
  • Water

Method:

  1. Take a handful of dried marigold flowers and grind them in a mixer to make a fine powder.
  2. Add 1-2 tsp turmeric powder to the marigold powder and mix well.
  3. Add a little water to the mixture and mix well to make a paste.
  4. Slowly add more water to the mixture until it reaches a liquid consistency.
  5. Sieve the mixture to remove any lumps or solid particles.
  6. Transfer the liquid to a bowl or tray and allow it to dry completely in the sun.
    Once dry, use a spoon to break up any lumps and store the orange holi color in an airtight container.

blue color

Component:

  • indigo powder
  • jacaranda flowers
  • Water

Method:

  1. You can get natural indigo powder available in the market and mix it with rice flour or arrowroot powder to make a dry colour. Indigo powder releases a rich natural blue color when boiled with water. You can use this concentrated liquid for watercolors.
  2. Jacaranda flowers get a deep blue color when boiled with water. For a liquid colour, boil the flower petals with water and make a thick paste. It can be mixed in water to play Holi.
  3. Dry the jacaranda flowers and grind them finely. Filter it and mix it with rice powder or arrowroot powder to prepare dry blue colour.

green colour

Component

  • spinach leaves
  • turmeric powder
  • Flour
  • Water

Method

  1. Wash and clean the spinach leaves and grind them in a mixer with water.
  2. Strain the mixture to get a smooth liquid and you can add a pinch of turmeric to enhance the colour. It can be used as liquid color for Holi. You can also use the paste of the leaves of the Gulmohar tree for this.
  3. Mix henna with rice flour or arrowroot powder to prepare a dry green colour.

yellow color

Component

  • turmeric powder
  • gram flour (besan)
  • dried marigold petals (optional)

Method

  1. Take 2 cups gram flour and 1 cup turmeric powder in a bowl. Mix them well. You can add dried marigold flower petal powder to enhance the colour.
  2. The colors may not be as vibrant or long lasting as the chemical colors available in the market. Always use organic and skin-friendly ingredients while making colors at home.
