Holi, one of the most vibrant and colorful festivals of the year, is just around the corner. However, chemical-laden colors leave our skin dry, hair rough and our energy levels low. It is essential to take extra care of your skin and hair before and after Holi to avoid any adverse effects. With a few precautionary measures, we can enjoy the festivities without compromising on our well-being.

Dr Ipsita Chatterjee, Ayurveda Expert and Technical Head, Soultree shares some easy tips to help you take better care of your skin and hair.

Hair care tips before Holi

  1. Massage your hair and scalp with the right hair oil and leave it on overnight to prevent dull, dry and brittle hair. Revitalizing hair oil enriched with amla and brahmi is recommended. Also, if you want to avoid applying oil, you can apply aloe vera gel on your hair and scalp before coming in contact with Holi colours.
  2. Tie your hair so that the color of Holi does not get into your hair. You can choose from top knots, messy braids or sleek back buns.
  3. For added protection and beauty to your Holi look, you can also cover your hair with a cap or bandana/dupatta.

Hair care tips after Holi

  1. To remove the color from your hair, first wash them with normal water. Later, wash your hair using a mild herbal shampoo and a good conditioner. It is suggested to use organic shampoo with licorice (mulethi) and bhringraj.
  2. Apply yogurt to your hair at least 45 minutes before shampooing to remove color and reduce damage.
  3. Apply proper oil or use a hair mask to restore the shine and nourishment of your hair after the festival. You can make your own moisturizing DIY hair mask by mixing two tablespoons of yogurt, one tablespoon of aloe vera gel, two tablespoons of conditioner (prefer using one with hibiscus) and one tablespoon of coconut/organic hemp seed oil . Spread it all over the scalp and hair length and wash off after 15 minutes.

Care of skin

skin care tips before holi

  1. The night before Holi, massage the skin with kumkumadi oil on your face with a Kansa stick. It hydrates the skin, which leads to less color absorption the next day.
  2. Use a hydrating toner, then apply a moisturizer (you can use one with kumkumadi in it) and a non-comedogenic sunscreen with SPF 30+ or higher on your face, neck, and ears before joining the festivities .
  3. To prevent dryness and chapping, cover your lips with hemp oil lip butter.
  4. For the body, apply a moisturizer that will nourish the skin and protect it from harsh dyes, such as Organic Hemp Body Oil.
  5. To protect your nails from damage, apply dark nail polish on them. Keep your nails short and coat them with nail lotion containing vitamin E.

skin care tips after holi

  1. Holi colors dry out your skin badly, so make sure you cleanse thoroughly twice. Use a good cleansing oil enriched with the goodness of kumkumadi using a cotton ball and leave it on for a minute before washing it off with a mild cleanser.
  2. Avoid exfoliating your skin to get rid of Holi colours; Instead, use a face mask to soothe your skin. You can use multani mitti and curd mask. Mix three tablespoons of curd and five tablespoons of Multani Mitti to make a smooth paste. Wash it off after 20 minutes of application.
