While most people associate Holi with Holika Combustion and playing with colors, festival Of colour’s represents a lot.
It appreciates the age-old teaching of the victory of good over evil, celebrates the beginning of spring and advocates the concept of ‘Beej ho Gaya’. It also encourages new beginnings and positivity. Maybe this is the reason why this festival is so popular in the liveliness Rajasthan RajasthanWhere every region celebrates it in its own way. As the festivities were restricted in 2021 due to the pandemic, this year the excitement for the festival is very high. Here are some unique ways the festival is celebrated:
gulal gota
The use of Gulal Gota is especially prevalent in Jaipur. A four-century-old tradition, gulal gota are small colored containers made of lac and plant-based gum. It is believed that the tradition of playing Holi with Gulal goats was started by the royal family of Jaipur years ago.

Gair is a local folk dance which is performed in different ways in different places. In Ajmer, men from 12 villages, dressed in colorful clothes, with sticks in their hands, dance in a large circle. Rohitash Gurjar of Chandvardai said that Gair is played among the tribal areas of Dungarpur as well as between communities like Gujjars, Jats and Rawats.
In Jodhpur, non performances are only for men. This includes abusive and offensive language songs. On the other hand, women are a part of ‘Lur’, another folk dance performed during the month of Phagun.

Pushkar’s ‘Kapda Phad’ Holi is also very popular among foreign tourists. Traditionally, a piece of clothing worn by the players is slightly torn. It is mainly enjoyed by playing with water. A special program is organized for foreign tourists at Bhrama Ghat, in which local people are not allowed to participate.
Dolchi Holi
A tradition followed in Bikaner, men throw water at other men in a bucket-like vessel called dolchi, which is made of camel skin. The tradition is believed to have started due to a dispute between communities over food but has now turned into a celebration.

Jaisalmer
In Jaisalmer, every year two people from the Pushkarna community are chosen to play the role of king and prince on the day of Dhulandi. The ceremony is held at the Sonar Fort during which a special court is held and a procession is held. The community then goes to play Holi with the members of the erstwhile royal family.
Like the Holi celebrations, the pre-Holi celebrations that begin a fortnight ago are also attended with great enthusiasm. Special Holi songs called Phag are sung in which many of them talk about the stories of Lord Krishna and Radha. Phag festivals are held in Lord Krishna’s temples across the state, during which artists dressed in colorful costumes glorify his stories.
The most attractive part of the Phag festival is playing Holi with flowers as it is believed that the use of colors can injure the idol.
