Holi colors contain harmful chemicals. That’s why it is very important to take care of your skin before and after Holi.

Holi, the festival of colours, is near. Holi is a festival of fresh harvest, gaiety, love and strength of relationships symbolically represented by colours. And while we love playing with colors on this day, we often overlook the damage it does to our skin and hair.

The color used during Holi is Gulal, (Abeer in Bengali). They were traditionally made using dried marigold flowers, Indian bael (stone-apple) leaves and organic ingredients such as talcum powder. Nowadays Holi colors contain harmful chemicals. That’s why it is very important to take care of your skin before and after Holi. Apart from making sure that your skin stays hydrated, you can follow the following effective skin care regime this Holi-

Dry or watercolor paint usually contains toxic chemicals such as mercury, asbestos, lead and silica, and mica. These stick to the skin for a long time and cause rashes, allergic skin reactions as well as eye injuries. If possible, it is better to use only organic gulal.

Chemical dyes can cause dryness, flaking or acne on the skin. The black color is made of lead oxide which can harm the kidneys. Applying coconut oil, almond oil or olive oil on the skin helps in preventing such chemicals from sticking to the skin. Face wash and shampoo can help wash off such colours. Lip balm should be used to avoid color stains. One can use sunscreen lotion and moisturizer to prevent unwanted suntan and dryness of the skin.

A paste of atta (wheat flour) and lemon juice effectively removes Holi colours, because of its bleaching ability. Multani mitti does the same by drying up the colours, which helps in their easy removal. After this face wash and shampoo can be used.

A paste of sandalwood, rose water, gram flour and turmeric powder can be applied to heal any damage to the skin. These herbal preparations soothe the skin, thanks to their anti-inflammatory properties, help reduce rashes and provide a cooling effect. Moisturizers can be used to prevent the skin from becoming dry or scaly.
