Sadly, there is no cure for the common cold or cough, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find ways to fight this seasonal disease. We have found a list of spices that give us relief from stuffy nose and itchy throat. These spices are easily found in our homes and are commonly used in our everyday cooking. Here are 7 spices that help in relieving cold and cough:
1. Honey
Honey is a naturally made remedy for cough. The antibacterial properties of honey soothe the throat and reduce throat irritation and dryness. You can consume honey several times as a tea, you can mix it with warm water, or you can take it as it is.
2. Turmeric
Ayurvedic expert Dr BN Sinha suggests that to clear the throat, drink a glass of milk mixed with a teaspoon of turmeric powder twice a day. Turmeric contains curcumin, which is an anti-inflammatory antiviral compound and has antibacterial properties.
3. Ginger
Ginger is one of the most trusted age-old solutions to our cough woes. Dr Balwant Mardia of 2S Wellness Centre, Jodhpur explains that home remedies made from ginger act as anti-bacterial remedies that provide relief from itchy throat and nasal blockage.
4. Cinnamon
One of the major health benefits of cinnamon is that it gives relief from cold. It is rich in antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties. Soaking cinnamon sticks in warm water can provide relief from a blocked nose.
5. Cloves
Cloves contain anti-inflammatory compounds that help with cough and cold. This is another classic home remedy that can be chewed raw, or mixed with warm water to relieve discomfort. People use clove oil to clear a blocked nose.
6. Garlic
Garlic contains the compound allicin, which may have antimicrobial properties. It lessens the severity of cold symptoms and can even help you survive a cold.
7. Black Pepper
Black pepper is used to make kadai, which is one of the best Indian remedies for cold and cough. This spicy ingredient contains nutrients like flavonoids, antioxidants, vitamin C and more. Delhi-based nutritionist Dr Anshul Jaibharat explains that black pepper can help reduce congestion in the chest.
