After celebrating 25 years of the City midsize sedan in India, Honda crossed another milestone – its 2 millionth car to be built in our market. Honda began manufacturing in India in late 1997, starting with the City, which went on sale the following year.

The milestone vehicle was, aptly, a new Honda City sedan, which rolled off the production line at the brand’s plant in Tapukara, Rajasthan. After the closure of its original Greater Noida facility in 2020 due to the pandemic, it is currently the brand’s only facility.

Honda India and Asia Regional Senior Management were present on the production line during the milestone. Commenting on the occasion, Takuya Tsumura, President and CEO, Honda Cars India said, “The historic milestone of 2 million production roll outs in India is a testimony to Honda’s commitment to the ‘Make in India’ initiative over the past 25 years. “

Honda says it has invested over Rs 10,000 crore in India in the last quarter and has a production capacity of 180,000 units for both domestic sales and exports. Apart from being retailed through 330 outlets across India, City and Amaze sedans are currently exported from India to 16 other markets.

What might come as a surprise, given Honda’s new focus on SUVs, is that the brand will drop the diesel next year as well. With the advent of stricter RDE emission norms, the brand’s only 1.5-litre diesel engine will not be upgraded and will instead be dropped entirely. Future Honda will be petrol only and petrol-hybrid.
