Hong Kong boy arrested with 11kg firecrackers on Lunar New Year’s Eve

According to a report in the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Hong Kong police on Saturday arrested a teenager for illegal possession of fireworks. The 15-year-old was caught by police as part of a campaign to check people from illegally setting off fireworks on a beach in Ma On Shan city. As per SCMP report the boy was arrested with illegal possession of firecrackers and carrying 11 kg firecrackers. Under Hong Kong’s Dangerous Goods Ordinance, a person can be fined HK$25,000 or sentenced to six months in prison for illegally possessing and lighting firecrackers.

The police said bursting firecrackers in residential areas was ‘irresponsible’. “It poses a danger to the safety of others and ourselves and could catch fire or explode at any time,” a Hong Kong police spokesperson was quoted as saying by the outlet.

Videos posted on social media showed fireworks going off at Sha Tin and Tuen Mun.

The SCMP said that another boy was also arrested, who allegedly claimed to be a member of the Triad Society.

People use firecrackers to celebrate occasions such as the New Year, as it is believed to bring good luck, health and wealth.
