How Biplab Deb Stuck as Tripura Chief Minister and Why He Had to Leave Eventually

Another BJP ruled state, another chief minister on the verge of election. this time the state was TripuraAnd the chief minister who had to step down was Biplab Kumar Deb. but why?

Locals say that people were unhappy with Biplab but not with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. These murmurs eventually reached the ears of top BJP leaders in Delhi, bringing about a change.

Biplab Deb became the Chief Minister of Tripura in 2018 after ending the 25-year-long rule of the Left. The BJP started its term with enthusiasm.

Sudip Roy Burman, who joined the party from Trinamool Congress in 2017, found a place in Deb’s ministry. But after a while the problem arose. Ironically, Biplab, which means ‘revolt’, was facing just that.

Burman and five ministers initially opposed within the party. Deb tried to quell the rebellion but was unsuccessful. The tension continued.

In 2020, under the leadership of Sudip Roy Burman, half a dozen MLAs went to Delhi and met BJP President JP Nadda. This was the first time a disgruntled state unit leader told Delhi bosses that if Biplab Deb continues to be the chief minister, the party will lose the 2023 assembly elections.

In 2021, after the defeat in the West Bengal elections, the central leadership of the BJP turned its eyes to Tripura.

Party’s national general secretary Dilip Saikia, Northeast regional secretary Ajay Jamwal and Tripura in-charge Vinod Sarkar all visited the state in August 2021. He spoke to party workers and leaders at all levels in the state.

BJP sources said they submitted their first report to central leaders, which contained several negative comments about Biplab Deb.

Sudip Roy Burman eventually left the BJP and joined the Congress in February 2022. The saffron party also took note of it.

Subsequently, more central observers were sent to Tripura and visited each district and interacted with the leaders at the grassroots level.

Sources say that many activists raised many issues against Biplab Deb.

It was said that he would take every decision on his own without listening to his ministers and without taking others into confidence.

Sources said that his image among the public was also not good and he was not able to deal with the crisis situation. He said that his behavior with party colleagues and general public was also not satisfactory.

He also reportedly failed to manage the COVID situation efficiently.

Party seniors met members of the core committee, including CM Deb, his deputy Jishnu Debbarma, state BJP president Manik Saha and Union minister Pratima Bhowmik.

Party sources say that by mid-April, the central leadership had decided that Biplab Deb would have to leave.

The strategy of changing the chief minister before the elections had helped the BJP in Karnataka and Uttarakhand. The Chief Minister of Tripura was called to Delhi and a message was given.

On May 14, a year before the election Biplab Deb resigned.
