How many diyas are used on Diwali? Check out the significance of each on Diwali 2022

Happy Diwali 2022: Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm in India. People light diyas and earthen lamps to mark the celebration. It is believed that diyas keep negative energy away. According to Hindu mythology, 13 diyas should be lit during Diwali and Dhanteras to pray for good health and prosperity.

  1. Dhanteras or ‘Dhantrayodashi’ is the first day of the five-day Diwali festival. A total of 13 earthen pots are to be burnt on the day of Diwali. To ward off death and evil spirits, it should first be placed outside the house near the garbage disposal unit.
  2. The second earthen lamp should be lit with ghee and kept in the worship temple of the house.
  3. A third diya is lit in front of an idol or a picture of Goddess Lakshmi to seek her blessings for good luck, prosperity and good health.
  4. The fourth earthen lamp should be placed in front of the holy basil plant, locally known as Tulsi in India. In doing so, it is meant to bring peace and happiness to the home and the family living in it.
  5. The fifth lamp should be placed outside the main entrance of your house to ward off evil spirits.
  6. A sixth lamp lit with mustard oil should be placed under a Peepal tree as it is considered auspicious. It symbolizes relief from financial distress and negative vibes.
  7. The seventh lamp should be lit in any temple near your house.
  8. The eighth lamp should be lit again near the dustbin to drive away negative energy and evil spirits.
  9. The ninth Diya is placed outside the washroom of the house to maintain the flow of positive energy around the house.
  10. The tenth lamp should be kept on the roof of the house. It symbolizes protection from negative energy.
  11. The eleventh lamp can be placed on any window.
  12. The twelfth diya is usually placed on the top floor of the house as well.
  13. The thirteenth lamp should be placed at any intersection of the house.
