How the ‘Sex and the City’ show ‘ruined’ Australian man’s penis

People have come up with many reasons not to watch the latest reboot of the hit 90s show Sex and the City and Just Like That. But very few can beat an Australian man’s reason to hate the native. A Reddit post shared by user u/Bobo7ate on the subreddit Sex and the City describes the man’s experience of feeling ashamed of his penis because of the show. The post read, “Just 20 years ago that show made my biggest mistake ever: getting circumcised.” Born in 1978, an Australian viewer of Sex and the City recalled that one day when he watched the ninth episode of the second season of Sex and the City, his fragile 21-year-old self felt ashamed. The post read, ‘I was 21 years old and watching with my siblings. The episode—titled Old Dogs, New Dicks—was about Charlotte dating a man who wasn’t circumcised—the norm in the United States—and hating him.”

In the episode, the women were seen talking about their gender preferences, and Australian viewers found that their uncircumcised penis was not favored by the characters in Sex and the City. The post read, “I remember Charlotte biting her nose and saying, ‘There was so much skin, it was like a Shar-Pei,’ and feeling disgust in her body.” During the same scene, Miranda, one of Charlotte’s friends, said, “I’m sorry, this isn’t normal.”

The user wrote in the post, ‘I felt like I was screaming from inside. I had an ugly penis for which people would judge me forever. This episode shows how Charlotte eventually forces her boyfriend to get circumcised.

The episode made an indelible impression on Australian audiences, who were fueled by insecurities about their gender. After watching the show, Australian viewers were convinced that they had to be circumcised. However, he said that even though he had been sexually active for a few years at the time, none of the women ever complained about his gender. But the episode managed to convince him otherwise and he was ready to go through the irreversible process.

After being circumcised, the Australian man felt he had bowed to an unrealistic standard set by American pop culture. The user wrote that he realized over time that his new gender didn’t really solve any of his problems. He said that when he shared his experience with his friends and those women, they asked him why he chose to be circumcised without consulting anyone first. The post further read, “I didn’t get circumcised because there was something wrong with my penis – I did it because I felt embarrassed by the American media and their blatantly untrue message that skin is dirty and ugly.”
