We all love to upgrade and modify our two wheeler so that it looks different in the crowd. Not only for its aesthetic appeal, but people also opt for modifications to add additional features and enhance the performance. But, before you make modifications to convert your two wheeler into your dream bike, you need to take permission from the RTO.

What modifications can I make to my bike?

After the Supreme Court’s 2019 ruling, not all bike modifications are legal. You would be surprised to hear that some changes carry a hefty fine or even jail you. Do not care! We have listed below all the legal modifications that you can make to your bike:

  • You can make minor adjustments or modifications to your bike, including the engine belly, tail tidy, decals, visors, winglets, and more. Such modifications do not alter the specifications and are therefore permitted.
  • Bike owners can also change the tyre. However, you can only equip your bike with tires that match the top-spec variant. Tires that don’t fit the model are a risk and illegal.
  • If your engine is no longer working properly, you can also replace your existing engine with your bike. But, to change the engine, you will have to take a No Objection Certificate from the RTO. Also, after changing the engine, you will have to apply for registration again. Another condition for engine modifications is that both the old and new engines must run on the same fuel.
  • Lastly, the decision does not restrict color modifications to the bike. The court has also made it mandatory to take permission to change the colour. As long as you have RTO approval, you can give your bike a new paint job without legal hassle.

How to get permission from RTO to change the color of your bike

Below, you can find a step-by-step guide on the process of getting permission from RTO for your bike modifications:

  • Step 1: First of all, you need to take a sample and price color code along with the RC book to the RTO. Visit the RTO in which you had earlier registered your bike.
  • Step 2: Fill the NAVM form, specifically for color modification of your bike. Next, wait for the signed letter of approval from the RTO accepting the color modification.
  • Step 3: Visit a reputed and authorized workshop that modifies the color of your bike appropriately. Make sure the workshop uses only quality paints or wraps for the process. Also, the changed color should be of the same color as approved by the RTO.
  • Step 4: After the process is over in the workshop, take your vehicle to the RTO again. Also, carry the RTO approval letter which you had purchased earlier. An authorized RTO officer will edit the RC book entry, after which you have to pay the required fee.

You should note that any other legal bike modification process follows the same steps. The permission process is very straightforward and does not take much time to complete.
