The 47th edition of the Saudi Professional League has grabbed headlines as Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest footballers to ever play the game, signed a record-breaking deal for Al-Nassr.
There are currently 16 clubs competing in a double round-robin style from around Saudi Arabia to determine the winner. At the conclusion of 30 games, the team with the most points will be crowned the champion. Riyadh-based Al Hilal is the most successful club in the tournament. However, Al-Nassr are the defending champions of the league.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has not featured in a game since Portugal’s loss to Morocco in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2022 almost a month ago. Before starting his new journey in Asia, CR7 turned down offers from Major League Soccer. He also rejected offers from several clubs in countries such as Brazil, Australia and his native country of Portugal.
Nine-time champions Al-Nasr have had a great start to the year. With 26 points from 11 games, they are currently leading the Saudi Pro League. On 5 January, Al Nassr are set to play Al Tai, who are currently in seventh place. Fans who wanted to see the start of Ronaldo’s tour of Arabia bought all 28,000 seats for the game.
However, media reports suggest that Ronaldo may miss the match against Al Tai on 5 January. In fact, he cannot play against arch-rivals Al-Shabab on 14 January as he has not yet served his two-match FA suspension, thus being suspended. After snatching a mobile phone from the hands of an Everton supporter, Ronaldo was penalised. This means Ronaldo will start for Al-Nassr on January 21 against Al-Ettifaq.
