HP University colleges pass percentage up by 4.38 points after another evaluation

The pass percentage of BA, BSc and BCom first year students of colleges affiliated to the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) has gone up by 4.38 percentage points after another evaluation, following students’ agitation over poor results. The low pass percentage of 31 marks in B.Sc, 57 in BA and 58 marks in B.Com triggered the agitation by students, who attributed it to the “faulty” online evaluation system.

A five-member Fact Finding Committee was constituted by the Pro Vice Chancellor in November to investigate the matter and plug the loopholes.

A difference of 4.38 percent marks has been found in the passing results of the first and third evaluation, which is a minor deviation.

Dean of Studies Kulbhushan Chandel said this means there has been a marginal improvement in the results as more than 4.38 per cent students have passed the third party assessment in addition to the previous results.

Chandel is also the chairman of the Fact Finding Committee.

He informed that the report said that students have performed poorly in the papers of Environmental Science and Language and students will be given five grace marks in Environmental Science as there is no subject teacher in most of the colleges. Chandel said that after the protest by the students, around 300 papers were re-examined to analyze the functioning of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)-online system and it was found that all the papers were properly scanned and marked .

The committee then decided to scrutinize around 3,300 random papers from colleges where the pass percentage was less than 10 and later send these papers for third-party evaluation.

Claiming that 80 per cent students in some colleges had low results, SFI and ABVP functionaries alleged that glitches in the online system resulted in the low pass percentage.

Over 42,000 students appeared for these courses in May-June this year and the results were declared in November.
