Congress councilor Suvarna Kallukuntala said the mayor did not even respond to the suggestion of councilors from his own party. “He should have put the motion to give up the gown in the meeting for debate and then he should have followed the motion,” he said.
Imamhusen Eliyagar said the mayor was referring to what the president was not wearing during his visit. “A civil felicitation to the President was a violation of all acts as it was not presented in a meeting of the General Assembly. The mayor is behaving like an autocrat and not taking the councilors of his own party into confidence. Shankarappa Harijan expressed regret that there were many development issues to be discussed in the city but the mayor’s insistence was rejecting any discussion. AIMIM councilor Nazir Ahmed Honyal said the mayor wore a gown when he assumed office but now he is disrespecting the floor.
The protesters also said that they were unaware whether the removal of the gown was allowed. “If it is allowed in any act or order, they should have insisted on it in the meeting. Unilateral decision-making is undemocratic.”

When the mayor expressed his desire to present a motion of condolence, he asked her to put on a gown before the proceedings began. At one point, the mayor warned some corporators to be suspended for their rude behavior. In the end he adjourned the meeting indefinitely.
Later speaking to reporters, Anchatageri said that in fact the suggestion to stay away from gowns was suggested by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. “As per his suggestion, we have requested the government to remove the gown, which was a British norm. The government can issue orders within a week. The gown should not be an issue as the mayor of Shivamogga has already stopped wearing it. This gown culture is prevalent only in Karnataka. All other states have shied away from it.”
