‘I am happy with your taking over’: Sonia Gandhi writes to UK PM Rishi Sunak

New Delhi: Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday congratulated the new British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and said it was a “proud” for Indians to assume his office. Describing Indo-British ties as “very special”, Gandhi hoped to further deepen ties between the two countries during his tenure. In a letter to the President of the Congress Parliamentary Party, duly signed by Gandhi, he wrote, “I am delighted to have you take over as the Prime Minister of Great Britain. It is certainly a matter of pride for all of us in India. India-British relations have always been very special and I am sure they will be further deepened during your tenure.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Rishi Sunak after being elected as the leader of the Conservative Party and the next British Prime Minister. Hearty congratulations @RishiSunak! As you become the PM of the UK, I look forward to working together on global issues and implementing the roadmap. 2030. Special Diwali greetings to the ‘living bridge’ of UK Indians, Because we transform our historical ties into a modern partnership,” tweeted PM Modi.

Apart from them, Indian MP and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday described the appointment of Rishi Sunak as UK Prime Minister as a “surprising” development. A tremendous desire to assimilate and accept people of other religious faiths and on top of that they have seen their worth,” he said. Sunak is now Britain’s 57th prime minister after being asked to form a government by King Charles III. This year is the third prime minister and will enter Downing Street as the youngest prime minister in two centuries.
