I see no reason why Jos Buttler needs to retire from Test cricket, says Rob Key

England’s men’s cricket managing director Rob Key has said he sees no reason why Jos Buttler needs to retire from Test cricket, given his breath-taking form, and added that the 32-year-old batsman is still Might become an “excellent” red ball player in the near future.

Butler finished Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 with Rajasthan Royals with 863 runs – the second most runs in a season of the league – in equal numbers with four centuries and half a ton.

The 57-Test veteran was dropped from the three-Test series against West Indies due to his form in the Ashes, where he managed just 107 runs at 15.28. He missed the fifth and final Test in Australia due to injury and was replaced by Ben Fox for the tour of the Caribbean, which England lost 0–1.

Butler has good Test credentials, scoring 2,907 runs in 57 Tests at an average of 31.94, but his poor performance in the Ashes was a blow to his red-ball credentials.

Key, however, appears in ‘The Wonney and the Tuffers’. Cricket Club’ show said, “Well, right now, Jose is clearly playing white-ball cricket. He’s not in that Test team, but I see no reason why Jos Buttler needs to retire from Test cricket.” .

“Now, unless he turns and says ‘I just want to go that white-ball way’ then that’s a different conversation. He’s had a huge IPL,” Key said.

“I guess he’ll come back and then he’ll start thinking things through, but if even in a year’s time, whatever, I don’t know why he has to retire unless he turns around and says , ‘I am not interested in the game of red ball whatever it is, it is not for me.’ I always thought he could be an excellent Test match batsman-wicket-keeper,” Key said.
