ICICI Bank alerts customers to new banking scam

New Delhi: Banking in India is becoming more user-friendly day by day, as technology has advanced and new payment channels have opened up, allowing customers to receive and transfer money in seconds. However, bank frauds have increased throughout the years, despite the authorities’ efforts to ensure utmost safety to the customers.

Hackers come up with new ways to commit bank frauds on a daily basis and ICICI Bank has written an email to its customers to protect them. “We have always ensured the financial security of you and your loved ones.” Similarly, we would like to warn you about a new type of fraud that is becoming more common,” ICICI Bank warned in an email a few days back. According to ICICI Bank, scammers are increasingly manipulating the WhatsApp or Facebook accounts of customers and demanding money by sending messages on their connections. “We have received many genuine requests for funds during these difficult times, so a request from a known acquaintance does not seem out of the norm.” The contact then transfers the required amount, without calling and confirming with the claimed person about the need for funds, as the request came from a known source,’ the email said. ICICI Bank had also warned customers in these cases. “Be cautious in such cases and always confirm.” “If your WhatsApp or Facebook account has been hacked in any way, please notify the authorities,” she wrote.

In another email, ICICI Bank gave several security tips to avoid ATM or debit card frauds. Check them out:

  • Treat the ATM/Debit card as the key to your bank account.
  • Do not give your card to anyone else to use. Never write your PIN everywhere.
  • Never leave your financial information on the phone or e-mail.
  • Make sure no one is standing behind you while withdrawing money from the ATM. Keep the keypad covered with your fingers at all times.
  • ICICI Bank will never send you an email or phone call requesting your PIN, password or other sensitive account information.
  • Do not click on links from unknown emails. These links may lead you to fraudulent websites.
  • You will need to sign up for the Bank’s SMS and E-mail notification services to keep track of your banking activities.
  • In the event of an unauthorized transaction, you should notify your bank immediately.
  • As per ICICI Bank instructions, you should never store your card details on your smartphone or laptop.
