The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, headed by BJP MP Brij Lal, on Friday recommended several suggestions to the Union Home Ministry to increase internet access to the underprivileged section of the population and boost protection against cybercrime.
The committee also recommended encouraging state governments to identify cyber hotspots in their state and maintain data profiles on cyber crimes committed in those hotspots.
The parliamentary panel said it believes that despite the boom in internet connectivity in the country, there may be a sizeable population in various states and union territories, which may have very limited access due to various reasons.
The panel, in its report submitted to the Parliament, said, “The committee recommends that the ministry prepare a data profile on the state governments to identify cyber hotspots in their state and cyber crimes committed in those hotspots and measures taken to prevent those crimes.” may encourage you to keep on Friday.
This data can be collected by the ‘Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C)’ and shared with other states to frame policies to deal with such cyber crimes, the panel said.
Therefore, the committee recommended that the police force may adopt various strategies such as publicizing its achievements at regular intervals in community, village and district-level committee meetings, increasing police-people contact, awareness weeks and public meetings. It added that the focus should be on a nationwide capacity building campaign, with emphasis on developing behavioral and social skills among personnel, along with high professional and ethical standards.
The Committee noted that the States and Union Territories have been requested to install IP cameras at strategic locations in all police stations and conduct periodic audits of all installed CCTVs.
The Committee further notes that the Ministry of Law and Justice has been approached to advise the States and Union Territories on installation of CCTVs in District Courts. The panel said it would like to be apprised of the status of action taken by the states and union territories in the matter.
