‘If loudspeakers are not removed from May 4…’ warns Raj Thackeray at Aurangabad mega rally

The loudspeaker controversy in Maharashtra deepened when MNS chief Raj Thackeray said on Sunday that his party workers would play Hanuman Chalisa if loudspeakers were not removed from mosques. He also warned that if the loudspeakers are not removed after May 4, then we will not sit silent.

“What happens in Maharashtra after that, I don’t know. I want to ask the policemen here to go out and start removing these loudspeakers from now on.

“To the police of Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), we will show you the strength. Stop these acts by them (Muslims). Remove all loudspeakers from temples and other religious places too, but remove (from mosques) first,” the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief said at a mega rally in Aurangabad’s Marathwada Sanskrit Mandal.

“If Uttar Pradesh can do it, why can’t Maharashtra?” asked Thackeray. He also clarified that the issue has not been raised now, but has been debated in the past as well. “I was asked by a reporter why I suddenly demanded to remove the loudspeaker. I said, ‘suddenly’? No, it has been raised before.”

He further said that the issue of loudspeakers is not religious but social. “But if you make it a religious issue, we will answer it with religion,” the MNS chief said.

Thackeray had recently courted a major controversy by giving an ultimatum to the Uddhav Thackeray government in Maharashtra that his workers would play Hanuman Chalisa near mosques. azaan Unless the authorities act on loudspeakers in mosques.
