‘If Pakistan doesn’t participate in next year’s World Cup in India, who will watch it?’: Rameez Raja

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Rameez Raja has said that Pakistan cricket team will not go on tour India for ICC men’s cricket World Cup in 2023 if the Men in Blue do not tour the neighboring country for the Asia Cup next year.

Asia Cup 2023 is to be played in Pakistan in September next year. However, BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who is also the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), last month said that the Indian team would not travel to Pakistan for the continental championship and demanded that the event be moved to a neutral venue.

Shah’s comment then ruffled some feathers in Pakistan and the PCB requested the Asian Cricket Council to convene an emergency meeting.

In the latest development, the PCB chief once again reiterated his stand on the tussle.

“If Pakistan does not take part in the World Cup to be held in India next year, who will watch it? Our stand is clear: If the Indian team comes here, we will go for the World Cup. If they don’t come, they can play the World Cup without us,” Raja told Urdu News.

“We will take an aggressive stand. Our team is showing performance. I have always said that we need to improve the economy of Pakistan cricket and that can only happen if we do well. We defeated India in the 2021 T20 World Cup. We beat India in the T20 Asia Cup. In one year, the Pakistan cricket team defeated a team with a billion dollar economy twice.”

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, to be hosted by India, will be the 13th edition of the 50-over World Cup. India will be hosting the quadrangular tournament for the fourth time in its history and there is little chance that the mega event will be moved out of the country.

Notably, Pakistan and India do not play bilateral cricket and have only met in global tournaments or multi-team events since 2013 due to strained political tensions between the two countries.

India’s last visit to Pakistan was for the 2008 Asia Cup, while Pakistan’s last visit to India was for the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup. The two teams last played each other in the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup in Melbourne on 23 October.
