After a long wait of 11 years, Google has finally relaunched Street View India After following the necessary policy requirements. To comply with government regulations, Google has partnered with local companies such as Tech Mahindra and Genesis International for mapping and technology delivery to end users. Of course, that means you won’t get to see great Google Street View cars traveling in America. Instead, Tech Mahindra, partner at Google India, has found a new innovative and cost-effective solution – use auto rickshaws to capture mapping data.

Mahindra & Mahindra chairperson Anand Mahindra took to Twitter to share a picture of the ‘desi’ Street View ‘car’ and said, “A Mahindra 3W commissioned by Mahindra Logistics to create and license Street View data by Tech Mahindra Done. To Google. That’s what I call Group Synergy!”

It’s the cameras, GPS location tags and other equipment on the top of the vehicle that matters. So, a fancy car or even an auto rickshaw (in this case) can do the job. Having said that, little is known about whether Mahindra is using only 3-wheelers to map the Street View data. It may be possible that the company may opt for different vehicles depending on the region and road conditions.

Google said that its partners for Street View have covered more than 150,000 km spanning 10 cities in India including Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Nashik, Vadodara, Ahmednagar and Amritsar. Google plans to expand this to over 50 cities by the end of 2022.

– Open Google Maps on your smartphone or desktop
– Zoom in on any street in cities where Street View is available
– Tap on area to view in Street View
