The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta has appointed Sahadeb Sarkar as its Director-in-Charge after the resignation of the incumbent director. This comes after the Board of Governors of IIM Calcutta accepted the resignation of Director, Prof. Uttam Kumar Sarkar, with immediate effect on Wednesday.

“Prof. Sahadeb Sarkar, a Professor in the Operations Management Group of the Institute has been appointed as Director-in- Charge in accordance with the provisions of the IIM Act 2017,” IIM Calcutta said in a release dated November 7.

According to NDTV, Professor Uttam Kumar Sarkar resigned for personal reasons and will continue as a professor at the premier management institute.

“Prof Uttam Kumar Sarkar will continue as a professor in the MIS Group of the Institute,” IIM Calcutta said in a statement.

In 2021, Professor Uttam Kumar Sarkar was appointed as the director of the IIM Calcutta. He is a professor of the Institute’s Management Information Systems (MIS) Group. He holds Bachelor of Technology (BTech), Master of Technology (MTech), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur.

Who Is Professor Sahadeb Sarkar?

Professor Sahadeb Sarkar holds a PhD in statistics from Iowa State University, United States. In 1997, he joined IIM Calcutta’s Operations Management Group. He was an associate professor at Oklahoma State University, US, before joining IIM Calcutta. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in the United States.

The Board of Directors of the IIM Calcutta congratulated Professor Uttam Kumar Sarkar on his excellent contribution as Director of the IIM Calcutta and wished him success for his future ventures.

As per an Economic Times report, Professor Uttam Kumar Sarkar is the second successive director of the institute to exit the post before the stipulated five-year tenure, following Anju Seth, the first female director of IIM Calcutta, who resigned in 2021, a year before the completion of her tenure.

Reportedly, Seth’s resignation letter, which was accepted immediately, blamed a “breakdown in confidence” between herself and IIM Calcutta board chairperson Shrikrishna Kulkarni. In August 2021, Uttam Sarkar was named director of the IIM Calcutta.
