IIT Bombay, JSW Group collaborate to set up technology hub for steel manufacturing in India

IIT Bombay Collaborated with JSW Group to set up a first of its kind, state-of-the-art, JSW technology hub in India for steel manufacturing. IIT Bombay has set up a Center of Excellence in Steel technology (CoEST) through the support of the Ministry of Steel, Government of India and other industry partners. The JSW Technology Hub will be set up within CoEST, with the main objective of achieving rapid expansion of quality steel production while keeping carbon emissions within target levels.

“The partnership with IIT Bombay will allow JSW Group to initiate and accelerate R&D efforts in the steel sector to develop enabling capabilities in steel technology for the Indian conglomerate. The JSW Technology Hub will also be the nodal point for JSW Group’s research activities beyond the steel domain,” said the institute.

As per the agreement signed between the two organisations, JSW will provide financial and technical assistance for setting up and building a technology hub with state-of-the-art infrastructure to undertake a wide range of R&D for steelmaking and its use. IIT Bombay and JSW Group will jointly use the JSW Technology Hub to conduct inter-disciplinary research projects and technical activities on various aspects of steel manufacturing and its uses.

The technical collaboration allows IIT Bombay and JSW to undertake research and training projects to develop patented industrial applications and solutions. JSW may decide to commercialize as well as operate these industrial applications in the future. A Joint Steering Committee will be set up with representation from IIT Bombay and JSW Steel. The committee will conduct the IITB-JSW technical collaboration.

IIT Bombay will also set up the Sajjan Jindal Steel Professor Chair to enable focused training and research on new and emerging technologies in steel manufacturing. The institution of this Chair will help IIT Bombay to adopt an interdisciplinary, collaborative, synergistic and translational approach to meet the persistent research and application-oriented demands from industry, society as well as government. The Chair will endeavor to leverage the existing knowledge base and provide a platform for further innovation and scale.

According to Sangeeta Jindal, Chairperson, JSW Foundation, “Our strategic partnership with IIT Bombay is a one-of-its-kind industry-academic collaboration to advance research in steelmaking. This powerful combination is a joint venture between the knowledge-rich faculties of IIT Bombay. and will leverage JSW’s technological capabilities to develop new industrial applications for steelmaking with a focus on low carbon emissions. This partnership will also launch new academic courses integrating existing courses. Will also provide academic and technical leadership in broad areas of research while working towards increasing consumption.

According to Prof Subhasis Choudhary, Director, IIT Bombay, “One of the visions of our CoEST is to facilitate the Indian steel sector to become a world leader. This tie-up with JSW Group will help us further strengthen our efforts in this direction. Through this partnership, we aim to achieve rapid growth in quality steel production, enabling India to meet its sustainability goals while keeping carbon emissions within target levels.
