IIT Delhi announces fee cut after students protest

The Institute of Information and Technology (IIT) Delhi on Friday announced reduction in fees for new postgraduate students who joined during the second semester of 2021-22 or onwards.

IIT Delhi took this decision based on the recommendations of a committee constituted by the Director to look into the representations made by a group of M.Tech students.

“As a result of the protests at IIT Delhi, the tuition and other fees have been substantially reduced on the recommendation of the committee appointed to oversee the issue. M.Tech. has been reduced from full-time tuition fee. 25,000 per semester to 17,500 per semester,” IIT Delhi said.

“Similarly, the tuition fees of other PG programs have been reduced. Apart from the tuition fees, other components of the fees have also come down,” it added.

Earlier, students of IIT-Delhi had protested the hike in fees for M.Tech programmes, which they claimed was more than two times this academic year.

The enhanced fee structure was implemented in January 2022 and decided by the board of the institute. Earlier, the educational expenses for M.Tech programs were 10,000 for each semester. Under the new charge structure, applicable to students accepted in 2022-2023, this was increased to 25,000 for every semester.

The students staged a ‘silent protest’ on the campus demanding amendment in the fee hike.

Also, the hostel fee was increased in a similar manner 10,500 for each semester 13,250 for each semester. Also, the monthly stipend that students get for doing the teaching assistant duties and lab work remains the same 12,400 per month. The 150% hike in tuition fees left the students worried and protested.

Recently, a similar situation was seen in IIT Bombay where students went on a hunger strike against the hike in the fee structure. On 7 August, the IIT-Bombay administration said it had to increase the fee to “survive and grow”. “The increase in hostel fee is necessary to cover the actual expenses, so that our other sources of income can be used for providing better educational facilities,” a statement from the institute said. The government cannot continue the subsidy facility beyond a point, the statement said. However, later the fee was reduced.
