IIT Kanpur is the first in India to offer a dedicated MTech program in drone technology, while the program on cognitive systems is also being launched, the first of its kind in the country, the institute said.

Indian Institute technology (IIT), Kanpur has approved two new MTech programs – Unmanned Aerial Systems Engineering and Cognitive Systems. According to the institute, it is the first in India to offer a dedicated MTech program in drone technology, while the program on cognitive systems is also being launched, the first of its kind in the country. The programs will be effective from the next academic session.

The MTech program in Unmanned Aerial Systems Engineering will provide students with an opportunity to specialize in areas such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) design and aeromechanics and autonomy of UAVs. While the MTech program in Cognitive Systems will cater to the study and application of cognitive principles in domains such as human-computer interaction (HCI), natural language processing (NLP), and translational neuroscience, IIT Kanpur said. The curriculum will include courses introducing students to the fundamentals of cognitive science, empirical methods, and modeling.

Regarding the launch of the new MTech programmes, Professor Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur said, “We are proud to announce the launch of these two new MTech programs at IIT Kanpur, which will provide our students with unique opportunities to make cutting edge will provide. Cutting edge research and development in emerging areas. Our new MTech program in Unmanned Aerial Systems Engineering will equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to become leaders in drone technology, which has many applications in sectors such as agriculture, transportation and defence. This program is in line with MeitY’s nationwide initiative on capacity building for drone technology with focused interdisciplinary collaboration across various educational institutions, training centers and skilling bodies.”

Prof Karandikar further added, “The launch of the MTech program in Cognitive Systems is the first of its kind and will help students gain a deeper understanding of the human mind and brain and apply cognitive principles in domains such as human-computer interaction, education.” , and neuroscience. This program is designed to bridge the gap between basic research and applications, and we are confident that our students will be well prepared to meet the challenges of industry and society.”
