IIT Madras admits 87 students from government schools to BS program in Data Science and Applications

A total of 87 students, including 39 women, in over 20 districts of Tamil Nadu have secured admission for BS degree in Data Science and Applications under the ‘Anaivarukkam IITM’ initiative. Out of the total, 45 students from government and corporation schools from different districts of Tamil Nadu (TN) were admitted to the IIT Madras BS programme.

Under the ‘Anaivarukkam IITM’ (IIT Madras for All) initiative, IIT Madras selected a group of 192 students from 58 government and corporation schools in and around Chennai. Based on the progressive learning outcomes demonstrated during 14-week individual training at IIT Madras, 68 students were selected to write the All India Aptitude Test for admission to the BS degree.

The curriculum is designed to offer students multiple entry and exit options where the learner can earn a certificate, diploma or degree, claims the institute. Also, students graduating with BS degree will be eligible to appear for GATE and pursue MTech India Or apply for a master’s degree offered by universities abroad.

Till now more than 15,000 students are enrolled in the program, with the maximum number of students from Tamil Nadu, followed by Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. “Anaivarukkam IITM initiative aims to increase the number of government school students who are enrolled in our BS programme. We are excited that the first batch of students has now been admitted through this initiative,” said the institute he said.

As soon as you introduce new programmes, we look forward to take it to the next level”, said Thiru Ambil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Hon’ble Minister for School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu while handing over the admit cards to the school students of Tamil Nadu government. IIT Madras also offers income-based scholarships of up to 75 percent for BS degree-seeking students. In addition, students who qualify through a collaborative effort with Tamil Nadu Adi Dravida Housing Development Corporation (TAHDCO) will receive full financial assistance from the Government of Tamil Nadu.
