IIT Roorkee to conduct research in drone technology, target to make 1 lakh drones by 2023

Indian Institute technology (IIT) Roorkee has collaborated with Garuda Aerospace and AGROB to jointly meet the growing demand for indigenous drone pilots in India. Under this collaboration, the target is to make one lakh ‘Make in India’ drones by the end of 2023.

Joint research will be done in software, robotics, digital solutions, drone pilot training, demos, AI-based solutions among other related areas and joint (pilot) projects will be undertaken, read the press release issued by the institute. The students of the institute will be involved in the development of hardware and drone flight strategies.

Professor Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee said, “This partnership will facilitate collaborative development of Make In. India Drones by providing innovative solutions. IIT Roorkee will focus on application-based solutions like AI based surveillance, and will be involved in providing customized solutions for drones. Students will be involved in the development of hardware and drone flight strategies.”

Speaking about the partnership, Professor Dharmendra Singh, Coordinator, Drone Research Centre, IIT Roorkee said, “We aim to develop a drone ecosystem through industry partnerships and provide value-added research inputs. In collaboration, we will develop the AI ​​drones of the future, educate farmers and agritech service providers and prepare them for the future. Additionally, training roadshows and drone and surveillance technology aero-shows are in progress.
