IITs again face opposition in Goa; CM asks people to stay away from negativity – Times of India

Panaji: Reaction to the growing protests of Indian Institute of Technology Goa ,IIT Goa) Project in Sangum constituency of South Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant Said on Tuesday that people should stay away from negativity.
Sawant said, “Some people have a habit of opposing projects unnecessarily. This is government land. There are some encroachers in that land. We will conduct a detailed survey. People should come out of the negative mindset.”
Sawant further said, “We have to give land to IIT, it should come in reality. We will not do injustice to the people, if anyone has rights as tenant they can submit documents to the collector.”
He said that the land proposed for the IIT project is being surveyed. “The technical team from IIT will come here, they will inspect it and once they say ‘OK’ for it, only then the work will go ahead,” he said.
Started in July 2016, the IIT Goa campus is temporarily . is located in Goa Engineering College (GEC) in Ponda.
While committed towards making Goa an educational hub, the government also faced agitation while providing land for such a huge educational project. When land was identified for IIT project shell-meloli In North Goa’s Sattari taluka, the affected people agitated, saying it would destroy the environment.
Bowing to people’s pressure, it was canceled and now land has been identified for this in Sangum, South Goa. Here too some people have opposed the project by calling themselves farmers, but the authorities have started the process of demarcation.
Earlier, it was also canceled in Canacona, South Goa due to protests.
Speaking on this issue, Sangam MLA and Minister Subhash Fali Desai said that people are confused and giving wrong information about the project.
Phal Desai said, “The protesters are instigated (by someone), if anyone has land in the demarcated area, they should tell. We will explain to the people and the matter will be resolved.”
“Those who are provoking people are not personally coming to the site to protest, but we know from where the vehicles come to protest,” he said.
“The area which the protesters are claiming (as their land) does not come under IIT. They have been given wrong information. Instead of fighting with the government, come to us and take the package. If they fight, So the government will ask to prove their ownership, then what will they get in litigation,” he questioned.
“I will not hold back. This project has potential and will provide employment to the youth. People will get business. We will take people into confidence,” he said.
Chief Minister Sawant had reiterated on two occasions that a permanent campus of the IIT would be built at Sangum in South Goa.
“For the last four years of my tenure as Chief Minister, we have been trying for IIT project at various places. One thing is certain that we identified the place in Sangum, and the way local MLA Subhash Phal Desai took the initiative. Show more positivity, IIT project will come into reality here,” Sawant had said.
According to Sawant, 7 lakh square meters of land is being demarcated for the IIT project, which is government land and hence there will be no hurdle in handing over the land to the IITs.
“I know this is a long pending issue of IIT campus. It is a long story. You all know it is always getting published in the newspaper, we have given place in Canacona, Sangam, Sattari. Every time there is a problem Aati Hai Sawant said during the convocation of IIT that this time I am not promising you anything, but I am telling you one thing that we are giving you permanent campus in less time.
