Coimbatore: A case has been registered against district BJP president Balaji Uthamramasamy and six other party functionaries for illegally gathering in front of the central jail on Friday night. ,
11 was arrested on September 21, when he protested the arrest of Uthamramasamy for making derogatory remarks against social reformer Periyar EV Ramasamy and Nilgiris MP A Raja during a demonstration organized by Hindu Munnani. They were booked for causing police personnel to discharge their duties and causing damage to some public properties during the protest.
While 11 BJP workers were sent to judicial custody the same day, the police registered a case against Uthamramasamy under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act the next day. On October 1, the Principal District and Sessions Judge’s court granted bail to Uthamramasamy and he came out of the Central Jail the next day. However, the bail plea of ​​the remaining 11 BJP workers was rejected by the court. He later moved the Madras High Court and obtained conditional bail two days back.
Around 5.30 pm, Uthamramasamy and hundreds of BJP workers gathered in front of the main gate of the central jail to welcome the 11 party men who were released on bail, a police official said. “They also brought a contingent of a band. Racecourse police asked them not to illegally gather in front of the jail and warned them. However, they defied the police and took 11 to the party office on VKK Menon Road. They also burst crackers in front of the party office.
The Kattur police have registered a separate case against BJP cadre Shesha Shastri for bursting firecrackers.
