IMD says monsoon will return from October 6; Heavy rain forecast in these areas

India’s June-September monsoon rains are likely to resume from the north-west region from October 6, the India Meteorological Department said on Thursday, marking one of the most delayed withdrawals of seasonal rains.

“Conditions likely to become favorable for onset of withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon from around 6th October 2021 from some parts of Northwest India,” India Meteorological Department tweeted.

The southwest monsoon rains, which are important for India’s farmers, typically reach the southern Kerala coast around June 1 and begin to retreat from the northwestern state of Rajasthan in mid-September.

IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Saurashtra and Kutch in Gujarat for today, 30th September followed by significant reduction.

The Meteorological Department has predicted very heavy rainfall in Gangetic West Bengal today and Bihar on October 2. The same is likely to occur over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on October 2 and 3.

Extremely heavy falls (> 20 cm) very likely at isolated places over Jharkhand on 30 September and Bihar on 30 September and 1 October.

Under the influence of pressure over Northeast Arabian Sea off Gujarat coast, .

Cyclones this year delayed the retreat and heavy rains lashed much of the country this week, damaging summer sown crops ready for harvesting.

The IMD said that India received 9% below normal rainfall till the end of August, but in September the rain fell by a third of the normal to 1%.

About half of India’s agricultural land is not irrigated and is dependent on annual monsoon rainfall.

Agriculture contributes about 15% to India’s economy, is the third largest economy in Asia, and feeds more than half of its population of 1.3 billion.
