IMD says rain intensity will increase in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry from Tuesday

Rain activities are likely to start in more areas in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that isolated rains may occur in some districts of the Western Ghats region from Tuesday.

During the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Saturday, Sirugamani in Tiruchi district received 8 cm of rain, the highest in the entire state in the day. Light rain was recorded at some places including Kodaikanal, Sirugamani in Tiruchi district and Taramani and Anna University in Chennai till 7.30 pm on Saturday.

Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely to occur in some parts of the state till Monday due to change in westerly wind speed or velocity convergence, officials said. The rain intensity is expected to increase in some districts on Tuesday and Wednesday, when the deep pressure in the Bay of Bengal approaches Tamil Nadu longitude.

The IMD has predicted isolated heavy rains in five districts including Coimbatore, Theni and Tiruppur on Tuesday and Wednesday. Light to moderate rain is likely in other parts of the state these days.

On Saturday, Chennai experienced hot weather with the day temperature reaching 37.1 degrees Celsius, which is about 2.3 degrees Celsius above the day’s average. In some areas, this trend of light rain in the evening or night may continue till Monday. The maximum temperature is expected to remain 35-36 degree Celsius for two days.
