Immense potential in Paradip port: Officials

New Delhi Sanjeev Ranjan, Secretary, Ministry of Sports, Shipping and Waterways said at an event that Paradip Port has the potential to become a world class port by improving efficiency and cost.

Ranjan was speaking at a workshop on ‘Gati Shakti’, a digital platform for coordinating infrastructure projects organized by Paradip Port Trust in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

Addressing the session, Ranjan called for expediting the widening of National Highway-53 (Paradip to Chandikhol) under Gati Shakti. The work of widening the State Highway-12 from Paradip to Cuttack to four lanes is being done on priority basis. Waterways play a vital role in effective logistics movement and the proposed Riverine Port of PPT is a step in that direction, an official statement said.

Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Odisha Limited and Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation MD Bhupinder Singh Poonia said the Odisha government has set a target of 100 million tonnes of steel production annually. The state is emphasizing on port based industrialization.

The state is also planning a 600 km road extension to boost connectivity. Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) is conducting a comprehensive logistics study for Odisha. A comprehensive industrial plan is also being planned for Paradip, the statement said.

PL Haranadh, Chairman, PPT made a detailed presentation on the capacity addition plans and efforts to synergize various modes of transport. Paradip port is capable of handling 60 million tonnes of thermal coal per annum by coastal shipping. He requested Coal India and Indian Railways to increase the allocation of more rakes of thermal coal to Paradip.
