In Mumbai, suburban students worst affected by COVID-19 school shutdown: NAS report

Out of the total 36 districts of Maharashtra, students from Mumbai suburban area have been the most affected by school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the findings of the recently released National Achievement Survey (NAS), 2021 by the Ministry of Education, school students in Mumbai suburban area found it difficult to learn maths and science as compared to languages ​​and social sciences in online learning mode.

The NAS 2021 report analyzed learning outcomes in classes 3, 5, 8 and 10 for several subjects. While the Mumbai suburban area was at the bottom of the learning charts for classes 8 and 10, it was only above Gadchiroli in terms of learning for classes 3 and 5, a daily reported.

The results were marginally better for private unaided schools than for government schools, where students may be deprived of digital learning tools. However, among city schools, central government schools performed better than private aided schools.

More than 90 percent of students from both city and suburban areas said they found it easier to learn with physical tutors than with online classes.

The survey further showed that more than 50 per cent of the students in classes 3 and 5 may perform at basic or below basic level in assessment of various subjects for the survey. The number of such students in classes 8 and 10 exceeded 70 per cent. The district of Mumbai city was three in learning for class 3 and four for class 10. However, the ranks fell to 11 for class 8 and 17 for class. 5.

The survey covered 273 of over 4000 schools across Mumbai. Of the 4700 students surveyed, 56 per cent were from government schools and 32 were from private schools. However, the survey report presented a promising picture of school education in Solapur, Satara, Kolhapur and Sindhudurg districts. Solapur had the highest score in learning for classes 3 and 5 in the survey.
