The subdued sentiment in the capital markets is keeping retail investors away from equities. The share of retail investors in the capital market segment of the National Stock Exchange fell to a six-year low, and the pace of new demat account creation slowed down significantly in 2022-23. The momentum is indeed winding down after the pandemic sparked, as the recently released March-quarter shareholding data for companies also showed.
